How do I ensure my loved ones get access to my Veault later?

Hoe zorg ik er voor dat mijn naasten later toegang krijgen tot mijn Veault?

You have filled your Veault with what matters to you: documents, passwords, personal messages, and digital files. That brings peace of mind, because everything surrounding your digital legacy is stored securely in one place. But what if your loved ones need that information at a time when you can no longer manage it yourself?

Veault Access offers a secure solution. It allows you to designate one or more trusted contacts who can later gain access to your encrypted vault, while you maintain full control.

Imagine: your next of kin urgently need access to your Veault, but you are no longer there to help. With Veault Access, there is a clear, reliable path for them — and for you as the owner.

What is Veault Access?

Veault Access is a built-in feature that allows you to designate one or more trusted contacts. These are people you trust (such as a partner, child, or close friend) who can gain access to your Vault.

What makes this system unique is the balance between security, ease of use, and control. You do not hand over your keys directly. Instead, you set up a process that only takes effect when it is truly necessary. As long as you remain in control, your vault stays closed to everyone.

A trusted contact is someone you designate to gain access to your Veault in an emergency. This is not permanent access; your vault remains closed as long as you are alive or as long as no emergency has been established.

Why Veault Access is better than sharing a password:

  • Your own password stays secret: You don't need to share your vault password with anyone.
  • Full control: You can cancel any request while the release process is still ongoing.
  • Secure process: Access is only granted after a controlled process with double verification.
  • Traceable: Every step is recorded and transparent, both for you and your trusted contact.

In short: sharing your vault password directly with your loved ones is an option, but Veault Access is safer, more reliable, and simpler. It combines peace of mind for you with clear instructions for your next of kin.

How does the process work?

The system is designed so that your data always remains encrypted, right up until release. Below, you can see how this works step by step.

1. You designate a trusted contact

You invite someone via your Veault dashboard. You determine under what conditions this person may gain access later.

2. The Access Document

After you have invited your trusted contact, the system generates a special access document (a PDF). This is literally and figuratively the key to the process. It contains:

  • A unique secret key in the form of a QR code and a character string.
  • Instructions for the trusted contact.

It is crucial that your trusted contact keeps this document safe. Without this document, access is impossible. Should your trusted contact lose this document anyway? Then you can always generate a new key for them, automatically invalidating the old key.

3. Requesting access

Should something happen, the trusted contact can submit an access request via a dedicated page. Two things are required for this: the access document and a verification code sent to the trusted contact by email.

4. The Release (With built-in security)

As soon as a contact attempts to access your vault, you as the owner receive an immediate notification. Depending on the policy you selected, a security step follows:

  • Automatic release (with waiting period): A waiting period starts, for example 7 days. If you are still alive and the request is unjustified, you can easily cancel the request during this period. If the system does not hear from you, the release takes place.
  • Release after death certificate verification: Here, the trusted contact must upload an official death certificate and a copy of their ID. Veault's support team manually verifies these documents before access is released.

5. Unlock

After release, the trusted contact can Veault permanently unlock and safely download the contents.

The benefits of Veault Access

The main benefit of this feature is that you are prepared for the unexpected, without compromising your daily security.

  • You remain in control: Because you can cancel the request during the waiting period, you don't have to worry about someone looking at your data unnoticed. Furthermore, you can revoke your trusted contacts' access at any time, automatically invalidating their key.
  • Zero-Knowledge: Just like our vault security, this process is also designed based on 'zero-knowledge' architecture. This means Veault has no insight into the secret keys of your trusted contacts, and that these keys are not stored anywhere on our servers.
  • No maintenance: Because the trusted contact has their own unique key, you don't need to pass on new details when changing your password. Access remains valid.

It is a comforting thought that your next of kin won't have to search for login details or documents during a difficult time. With Veault Access, everything is ready for them, in a secure and respectful way.

Already have a Veault? Setting up a trusted contact takes only a few minutes.

You know what matters to you. Now is the time to secure it safely.
